The hadith about Fatima’s jealousy is not well understood

Many Muslims in the world degrade the daughter of the Holy Prophet (may the peace and blessings be upon him and his family) Fatima, knowingly or unknowingly by misquoting the following hadith

‘Ali bin Husain said that Miswar bin Makhramah told him that ‘Ali bin Abu Talib proposed to the daughter of Abu Jahl, when he was married to Fatimah the daughter of the Prophet.

When Fatimah heard of that she went to the Prophet and said: "Your people are saying that you do not feel angry for your daughters. This ‘Ali is going to marry the daughter of Abu Jahl."

Miswar said: "The Prophet stood up, and I heard him when he bore witness (i.e., said the Shahadah), then he said: ‘I married my daughter (Zainab) to Abu-As bin Rabi’, and he spoke to me and was speaking the truth. Fatimah bint Muhammad is a part of me, and I hate to see her faced with troubles. By Allah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah and the daughter of the enemy of Allah will never be joined together in marriage to one man.’"

He said: So, ‘Ali abandoned the marriage proposed.
From the book - Sunan Ibn Majah

The hadith (above) contains a condensed summary of the event that supposedly took place in the time of the Holy Prophet (saw).

Recently, Basim (a ShiaChat Moderator), translated a lengthy hadith that shed some lights into the event that made Fatima (may peace be upon her) upset.

Please click here to see the original topic and references in Arabic, Urdu and English.

I am reproducing in its entirety a post by Basim from ShiaChat

From the book: Ilal Sharai by Shaykh Sadooq, Vol.1, Chapter on why Sayyida Fatimah (a) was buried at night, Hadith 2, page 185-189:

In the hadith a man comes to Imam Ja'far asking why Sayyida Fatima (as) was buried at night, and Imam Ja'far (as) himself opts to tell him the entire story. This shows how absurd it is to say that this a part of history we'd not like to talk about, since it gets no where near harming the status of any of the Infallibles (as).

Imam Ja'far tells the man that once a liar came to Sayyida Fatimah (a) and gossiped and lied to her about Imam Ali (a) marrying Abu Jahl's daughter. Sayyida Fatimah (a) would not believe him and repeatedly asked him if he was saying the truth, and he kept saying he did. So then she took Imam Hasan عليه السلام, Imam Hussain (a) and her daughter Kulthoom (a) with her and went to the Prophet (pbuh) where he was praying.

She was worried and troubled. So the Prophet (pbuh) took Fatima (a) with him to where Ali (a) was and asked Ali (a) to call Talha, Abu Bakr and Umar and reminded them all that whoever hurts his daughter, hurts him and whoever hurts him, hurts Allah.

The Prophet (pbuh) then asked him why Ali (a) had did what he did, and Imam Ali (a) replied that the news which has reached Fatima (a) is wrong and he can not even contemplate of such a thing.

The Prophet (pbuh) said Ali (a) has spoken the truth (which shows he already knew, and it wasn't really Imam Ali (a) standing in some kind of a court, being questioned, as some people like to portray it as!!), and Fatima (a) smiled so broadly that her teeth were shown! Umar and Abu Bakr secretly said to each other after this event that they were puzzled at why they were called there.

Imam Ja'far then goes on to tell the man about the after-events of the Prophet's (pbuh) death; of Fatima (a) refusing to talk to them. He tells the man that at one point she reminded both Abu Bakr and Umar of this incident where the Prophet (pbuh) explicitly said whoever hurts her, hurts him and whoever hurts him, hurts Allah so that people can bear witness that they were present when this was said to them.

Nowhere in the hadith is it said that Fatima (a) believed in what the man said. She was saddened and worried by what she had been informed of - yes. But it wasn't because she believed the Imam had proposed to Abu Jahl's daughter. It was because her husband, the future Caliph and Imam of the Muslims had really ugly rumors flying around about him! Isn't it completely normal for a woman to get worried, when her husband gets trash-talked?

Also, Abu Bakr and Umar were completely right to be puzzled about being called in the middle of the night for something that was between Ali and Fatima. But it wasn't something that was between Ali and Fatima! The Prophet (pbuh) wanted to make use of the opportunity (of a sad and worried Fatima (a) ) to send a message to them both of the consequences of hurting her. It's funny how people use this story in a way completely opposite to what it is meant for.

Rajab 13: Birthday of Imam Ali (as)

Tomorrow is the birth date of Imam Ali (may peace be upon him). The following are some of his wonderful sayings
  • We, Ahlul Bayt (chosen descendants of the Holy Prophet), hold such central and balancing position in religion that those who are deficient in understanding and acting upon its principles, will have to come to us for reformation, and those who are overdoing it have got to learn moderation from us.
  • Anyone who loves us Ahlul Bayt must be ready to face a life of austerity.
  • If you understand Allah's Majesty, then you will not attach any importance to the creatures.
  • You are ordained to recognize the Imams (the right successors of the Holy Prophet) and to obey them.
  • Poverty is the worst form of death.
  • One should not obey anyone against the commands of Allah.
  • There is enough light for one who wants to see.
  • People often hate those things which they do not know or cannot understand.
  • If you want to remove evil from the minds of others then first give up evil intentions yourself.
  • If two opposite theories are propagated one will be wrong.
  • Death is never very far.
  • O son of Adam, if you have collected anything in excess of your actual need, you will act only as its trustee for someone else to use it.
  • One who comes into power often oppresses.

The Waqifites' and Their Doctrines

I just found out that the cause/reason behind appearance of Waqifites had to do with usurping of the Khums.

Imam Musa al-Kadhim (as) appointed a few agents to manage khums. After a while and unknowingly, these agents started using the community wealth for personal use. When Imam Musa (as) died, his successor, our eight Imam ar-Redha (as) requested the khums to be sent to him. These agents declined by claiming that Imam Musa al-Kadhim (as) did not die in the prison.

The Waqifities maintained that Imam Musa b. Ja‘far, peace be on him, was alive, did not die, and would never die, that he was raised to the heaven just as al-Masïh b. Maryam was raised, and that he was the awaited one who would undertake (the office of the Imamate, al-qa’im) and fill the world with justice and fairness as it was filled with oppression and tyranny. They claimed that the one who was in the prison of al-Sindi was not Imam Musa, peace be on him, rather the people imagined that he was in prison.

Islamic Sect: The Waqifa

Al-Shahrastani in his book al-Milal wa al-Nihal describe Waqifa as:
Waqifa sect believed in the Imamah of Imam Jaffar as-Sadiq (as), his father Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as) and Imam Zayn al-Abiden (as). Some of the Waqifa do not believe in the Imamah of any Imams that descend from Imam Jaffar (as).

A number of sects are defined under waqifa by the author.
  • Nawusiya: These are either followers of a man called Nawus or reside in a village called Nawus. They believed that Imam as-Sadiq is still alive and that he will not die until his re-appearance where he (Imam) will be successful.
  • Aftahiya: The Aftahiya believe in the transmission of the Imamamh from Imam as-Sadiq to his son Abdullah al-Aftah. Abdullah only lived for 70 days after his father and died leaving no male issue. Please see the following link.
  • Shumaitiya: The Shumaitiya are followers of Yahya b. Shumait. The description about this sect is very ambiguous.
  • Ismailiyya are al-Waqifa. They believe in the Imamah of Ismail b. Imam Jaffar Sadiq(as) (his father's successor). Some of Waqifas rejected that Ismail has died while other believes that he did. References about the death of Ismail.
  • Musawiyyas believe in the Imamah of Imam Musa al-Kadhim but not his descendent.

Stop the Shi'ite holocaust in Malaysia

Shia representative in Malaysia sent an open letter to the MalaysiaKini newspaper (Note: MalaysiaKini is the opposition media) on May 28th. I am reproducing the entire letter here.

The Letter:

Harassment against members of the Muslim Shi'ite sect by Selangor's Islamic Council (Jais) by its new director Marzuki Husin, are becoming more common lately.

Ar-Ridha, a non-government organisation suspects the raid on a function in Gombak by Jais, that comes after relentless attacks from the local media, is planned and malicious.

Recently a group of Jais enforcement officers in collaboration with the police and Selayang Municipal Council raided the event that included a luncheon and cultural and art activities at Dataran Rakyat, Taman Sri Gombak, near Kuala Lumpur in conjunction with the commemoration of the birth anniversary of Sayyidatina Fatimah Az-Zahra, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad.

We suspect this is a concerted plan to cripple the luncheon organised by Ahlul Bayt Community (Shi'ite sect), following of two newspaper articles published in Berita Harian and Kosmo on May 25.

Numerous articles have been published such as deviationist religious leader arrested', 'Threat of the Shi'ite sect' and so on, along with interviews with Jais assistant director Rais Rasid.

Allegations that the Shi'ite group has a hidden motive to spread its beliefs through the luncheon in Gombak are untrue, as the function were attended by various races and religions.

We are stunned by Jai's statement describing the Shi'ite doctrine as a dangerous. Jais looks to be dividing the unity of Muslims as opposed to Prime Minister Najib Razak's 1Malaysia.

Instead, Jais should devote their efforts to tackling the social problems faced by Muslims more seriously, and stop inhibiting the freedom of speech and the rights to religious freedom of the minority sect, who are also protected under article 11 of the constitution.

Jais' actions looks like an attempt to divert public attention from the increasingly serious social problems such as crime that increases by the day, that the religious authorities have failed to address.

Jais should better focus on curbing social ills such as cohabitation without marriage, adultery and incidence of illegitimate children, who number over 250,000 and increasing.

And they should deal with widespread alcoholism, as Malaysia with its small population is reported to be amongst the top 10 countries in the world with most the most alcoholics.

Therefore we urge Jais to stop persecuting and denying the constitutional rights of the Shi'ite minority in Malaysia in line with the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) resolution and the Amman Message 2008 that recognise the Shi'ite sect in 88 member countries.

The UN assembly of 1948 also acknowledged the rights of the Shi'ite sect, and the UN resolutions of that year also define the crimes of genocide Act that outlaws ethnic and religious cleansing and language and cultural elimination, that holds countries, authorities as well as individuals liable.

Formula 1 race in Bahrain is cancelled.

This should have been done much earlier. But it took an online petition signed by "almost" a half million people around the world to change the organizer's mind.

I am quoting words from the outspoken Red Bull driver, Mark Webber. He has been quoted extensively in the media recently for slamming F1 for going ahead with the sporting event in a country where the government is cracking it's people in the most brutal manner.

"In my opinion, the sport should have taken a much firmer stance earlier this year rather than delaying its decision in the hope of being able to reschedule it in 2011. It would have sent a very clear message about F1's position on something as fundamental as human rights and how it deals with moral issues".

On his Twitter account just prior to the decision to run the Bahrain race on Oct. 30, Webber wrote: "When people in a country are being hurt, the issues are bigger than sport. Let's hope the right decision is made."

Malaysian Obedient (Wives) Club

I am doing a little bit reading about the Malaysian obedient club. Apparently, the club is setup by female ex-members of the al-Arqam group. The al-Arqam group was banned over a decade ago, though you can always find remnants of the group still active in one form or another. The female members of the group (al-Arqam) always wore their obligatory black niqabs (face covering).

The old (banned) group went at length to emphasize polygamous marriages. So it should not come as a surprise to anyone that the objective of the new club is to share with wives knowledge on how to satisfy their husbands.

The spokeswoman for the group said

“When husbands come home from work, wives do not welcome them with warm, alluring smiles and sexy dressing sprayed with beautiful fragrance to stimulate sexual arousal - but with stale saliva. This is the reality today.

“Much of the problems in society are caused by disobedient wives who do not bring joy and happiness to their husbands and do not serve their husbands well,” Global Ikwan's spokesperson Maznah Taufik had said, before announcing the move to form the club.

Other news:

Malaysian Obedient (Wives) Club launched
Blaming wives for infidelity and almost all other weaknesses of men, a polygamous movement is launching a club to make wives obedient and submissive, so as to make their husbands a happy lot. (Published on MalaysiaKini June 2 2011)

Muslim women have been discouraged from joining The Obedient Wife Club, for it disparages the dignity of women. (Published on MalaysiaKini June 8 2011)

Interesting hadiths about Ghulat

The True Face of Tashayyu (that is the name of the blog) posted many interesting hadiths about Ghulaw (Exaggeration in the belief of Imamah).

Key facts about the Ghulaww
  1. They falsely believe that Allah swt has given the Holy Prophet (pbuh &hf) and Imam Ali (as) the powers over the creation, to give sustenance and to give life and to take away life (death)
  2. They falsely believe that Allah swt needs partners in creation, giving sustenance and in the matters of life or death.
  3. Believing in the reincarnation makes you a disbeliever (not a Muslim)
  4. Ghulats are disbelievers and mufawidha (delegators) are polytheists.

Who is Abdullah Ibn Saba?

The enemy of Shia accused him as the founder of Shiaism. He is said to be a Jew from Yemen. And you know how much Muslims like to blame Jews for everything.
